Dr Mayesha Alam speaks to the Natural History Museum about climate change’s disproportionate impact on women and girls. Women confront the effects of climate change across much of the globe but particularly in the Global South, where we are also seeing the majority of climate change-related extreme weather events. They are statistically much more likely to be killed during extreme weather events – such as floods, tsunamis or typhoons – and those who survive face unique challenges and dangers during displacement, including exploitation and abuse. Dr Alam discusses the lived experiences of women on the front line of climate change and how some are now leading the way on climate action.
