What is the Role of Financial Sanctions in Tackling Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking? is based on 18 anonymized semi-structured interviews with officials from the UN, US, EU, UK, and Canada, financial institution representatives, and experts on sanctions, modern slavery and human trafficking, transnational organized crime, supply chains, and corporate governance. This study is also based on desk research, including existing sanctions regimes, relevant legislation, and academic/policy studies.

The report's author, Dr Erica Moret from the Geneva Graduate Institute, presented its findings and recommendations. Daniel Thelesklaf, Project Director of FAST did the introductions and welcomed the attendees to this virtual launch. Following the introductions were the opening remarks by Angelique van der Made, Senior Policy Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. H.E. Christian Wenaweser, Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the United Nations, also gave his remarks during this event. Dr Justine Walker from ACAMS gave a keynote address focusing on the role of sanctions in combatting financial crime. This was followed by presentations on the practical challenges in sanctions implementation by Michael Schoeb, the Director of FIU Liechtenstein, who gave a Government perspective, and FAST's Dr Frank Haberstroh, who focused on the financial institutions.
